  • "Where do you go for barbecue?" comes just after "What's your favorite Tex-Mex?" For the last few years, one of our favorite barbecue joints was closed. Now Hot Spot BBQ has reopened and it's as good as we remember.

  • Basic service but awesome barbeque. The brisket is tender and juicy like it should be. My favorite Brisket place in the USA.

A Smoldering Return
BY JULIA CELESTE
In this town, "Where do you go for barbecue?" comes just after "What's your favorite Tex-Mex?" For the last few years, one of our favorite barbecue joints was closed. Now Hot Spot BBQ has reopened and it's as good as we remember. The tiny triangle on North St. Mary's Street is smartly positioned between Pearl and the club drag, placing Ricardo Arsate and daughter Rochelle's smoked goods in a sweet spot. While the time off hasn't altered the meat's deep smoky flavor, it has changed Rochelle: A head-on car accident in October of 2009 left her near death. "We had to decide whether to sell the property and give up on everything we built, or keep paying on it and reopen. I chose to reopen and commit to steady hours." Now 50-plus pounds slimmer and about 50 years wiser, Rochelle is refocused on the restaurant's success. Ubiquitous brisket, chicken and ribs share billing with the elusive smoked lamb breast and smoked cabrito. Both are fall-off-the-bone tender with a nicely balanced salt-and-pepper rub. The gently packed house-made beef/pork sausage has a fine grind and a mere hint of kick, playing yin to the assertive pepper on the beef and pork ribs. Chunky pulled pork owns its smokiness without giving into it. And nothing is over-salted—in fact, the sides could use a bit more seasoning.

A special late-night menu on Friday and Saturday draws crowds until 2 a.m.—"or until we run out"—and an all-day $5 combo is an amazing deal.

A few picnic tables, outside only, make this a great gobble-down destination or take-out for delayed gratification.
